Charities profit from sIng-it-yourself Elijah
CHORAL singers from all over the country will meet at Huddersfield Town Hall on November 2 for a performance of Mendelssohn's oratorio, Elijah. The "Come and SIng Elijah" is being staged in aid of breast cancer charities in Leeds an Huddersfield.

Enthusiasts can either turn up at 1.30 to rehearse and sing or simply come to hear the performance at 7pm.

The choral forces will be accompanied by the Sinfonia of Leeds under the baton of Simon Lindley and Dr Francis Jackson, who will have just celebrated his 80th birthday, will play the organ.

Soloists Deborah Dales, Alison Hudson, Graham Webber and James Askworth complete the musical line-up.

Marsden premiere
THE Rev Caryl Micklem, author of the hymn For the Fruits of his Creation, will be the guest preacher at Marsden Parish Church on September 14. He will be present to hear the Marsden choir, directed by Douglas Bell, sing his hymn Come, let us raise our voices to the Lord, to Bairstow's hymn tune, Huntington.

This little-known gem, a broad, spacious, far-reaching richly harmonised melody in D major, appears in the appendix to Dr Francis Jackson's recently published biography of Sir Edward Bairstow.

Mr Micklem, 72, wrote the words for the tune in 1996 but this will be the first performance of the four-verse version.
