Royal School of Church Music - Wakefield Area

Updated 26 May 2018

Gordon Appleton - We were all shocked and saddened to hear of Gordon's untimely death.  Gordon was well known to many in the Wakefield RSCM Area, and he will be sorely missed.  His funeral was on 27th April at Ripon cathedral, and the service was streamed via YouTube - available still on 26th May at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI_NwsYRoVw.  A year on, Saturday 27th April 2019, there will be a memorial Festal Choral Evensong open to all, (booking will be necessary), also in Ripon Cathedral.  Details will follow later.

Choirs Festival 2018 - This will take place on Sunday 10th June in Wakefield Cathedral.  All invited to the service of Choral Evensong at 4.30pm.  Choirs and singers invited to take part - rehearsal at 2.30pm;  each singer will need a copy of the music, and these can be ordered from Geoffrey Lockwood  (email at the bottom of this page, or telephone 01484 688487).  Copies of the music booklet are only 1 each (postage extra at cost - or arrange to collect).   They contain all the music needed for the service - in addition to the hymns and psalm, there are the Preces & Responses by Byrd,  Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis by Stanford in B flat, and the anthem The heavens are telling from Haydn's Creation.

The Area Annual Meeting was held on 23rd May at the Cathedral.  Although we currently have 51 affiliated choirs/churches and a further 23 individual members, attendance was low at the meeting.  Thanks were expressed to Tom Moore for his unstinting efforts to keep the Area functioning despite having no secretary for some time.  There is still a vacancy for a secretary, and we would really appreciate some secretarial help on the Committee.  It's not a particularly onerous task - there are only normally 4 committee meetings each year.  Emails sent to rscmwakefieldpublicity@gmail.com will currently reach Tom, who will be pleased to give further details.

Newsletters - We send out details of forthcoming events from time to time, no more than a few times each year.  These are automatically sent by emal to affiliated correspondents and individual members if they have supplied their email addresses to central RSCM.  Of the 51 affiliated churches, 10 currently have correspondents who have not specified email addresses.  Because we don't have enough secretarial support, we can't guarantee to reach these churches.  If you represent an affiliated church, please ensure we have an email address on file.  You can do this by subscribing as below.

If you would like to subscribe to RSCM Wakefield emails, please click on this link and enter your details as requested.  In the AFFILIATION field, please enter your church name (whether affiliated to RSCM or not), in the format place-dedication (e.g. Holmfirth Holy Trinity, or Honley St. Mary, or Holmfirth Methodist).  If you are not associated with a church, but sing in a secular choir, please enter the choir's name in the AFFILIATION field (e.g. Holmfirth Choral Society).  If neither of these applies, please enter in the AFFILIATION field the word INDIVIDUAL.

GDPR
has now come into force, and to comply with this, we need active consent to send you the newsletters unless you have given your details to RSCM as a correspondent or individual member.  If you are not in these categories, please sign up (again if you've already signed up).  Sorry for this extra requirement.  A Data Protection Policy document is in preparation and will shortly appear here.

We currently have almost 100 subscribers to our newsletter emails, and the events we have promoted in recent months have been successful.  However, our committee really does need a few more helpers.   If you are willing to give up just a little time - only around 4 meetings each year, plus taking part in some of the events, do please get in touch.

Chorister Award Exams

The 2018 training day was held at St. Giles church, Pontefract, on 10 March; the Chorister Award exams were held on 19th May at QEGS, Wakefield.  There may be exams available later in the year, and similarly next year.    A brochure with information about our Area awards is available,  and further details from our awards administrator, Fiona Fearnley : ludwigrod@sky.com  07917 198024

Details of the syllabus, and entry forms are available centrally at http://www.rscm.com/area/wakefield/

Are you interested in joining our Area Committee and helping organise events for choirs and instrumentalists in our area?  Contact our secretary at rscmwakefieldpublicity@gmail.com

This is a temporary page for publicising events of interest to members of church choirs in the Wakefield Area.  It is anticipated that this will be soon incorporated into a website for a wider area.  All RSCM affiliated churches have two contact names (in some cases the same person, which rather defeats the purpose of dissemination information as widely as possible), but it may be that other choir members might like to receive information directly.  Also, events organised by the RSCM committee are also open to non-RSCM members (although there may well be a higher cost involved), so we are happy to allow anyone to sign up for emailed information.  In just a few cases, the nominated contacts have not supplied the RSCM with email addresses.  These contacts are sent postal information, but it is not possible always to advertise everything that comes to the attention of the RSCM Committee by post - we can however send out emails conveniently.

RSCM member churches are also invited to let the secretary know of any events they are themselves organising to which they would like to invite others, and we will try to include details with the publicity emails.

The RSCM Sheffield Area - which borders our RSCM area, and offers events sometimes closer than those in our own area - has sent me a copy of their newsletter number 1.  I've made this available if you would like to download a copy (pdf file, approx 800kbytes long) from:  http://hudds.org.uk/rscm/RSCM SheffieldAreaNewsletter 1.pdf
