True to Truro

Geoffrey Richardson ARCO is one of our active senior members. He was managing director for 30 years of a textile company in New Mill.

Present post: I haven't had a permanent post since leaving Gledholt Methodist in 1957 but I still help out at various places.

First organ job: Gledholt Methodist Church. I was appointed in 1938.

First teacher: James Buckley, organist of New Mill.

Play anything else: No. I sing bass but I wouldn't call myself a singer.

Best moment: Giving a recital in Truro Cathedral just before my Army de-mob. The programme included Boellmann's Suite Gothique and Widor's Toccata. While in the Army I also once gave a recital at Ypres Cathedral.

Oddest moment: In the spell before demob I played the cinema organ, a Compton, for a few months in Plymouth including a special programme on VE day.

Greatest inspiration: G D Cunningham's recitals played from memory at Huddersfield Town Hall. There was always an arrangement or two.

Favourite instrument: I still love the Father Willis at Truro. It's only small but it's a wonderful instrument.

Cherished recording: I have a tape of Peter Hurford playing Bach at the Domkirche at St Totten in Austria which I enjoy.

How important are pork pies to you: Very. The best I ever had were in Cambridge when I used to travel down there on business. They were magnificent.

Malcolm on the mend

Malcolm Cruise, organist of All Hallows', Almondbury, and our president-elect, is making good progress following a heart attack in July. Two weeks after leaving hospital he walked down the aisle at Almondbury for the wedding of his daughter, Victoria to chef Darren Milner.

Malcolm, besides his work as Arts Editor of the Huddersfield Examiner, is also Wakefield Diocesan organ adviser. He is taking a short break from the organ bench but he hopes soon to be back. We wish him a complete and speedy recovery.
